The Dao Does… Skincare with Brittany Hindmarsh from ONDA Beauty

Hi there! I’m Brittany, I’m 27 years old and have been a Beauty/Skin Therapist for 10 years now. I began to specialise in skin when I found a passion for clean beauty and skincare, as well as performing Facial treatments, I currently at ONDA Beauty.

Thank you for your time, Brittany, let’s start with – what is your morning skincare routine?

Thank you so much for having me on The Dao Does Journal! My morning skincare begins with one cleanse in the shower which is important to cleanse off any dead skin cells, sweat & oils that accumulate overnight. I follow this with a barrier-protecting serum or a Vitamin B or C, currently, I’m using the Skin Reset by Emma Lewisham. I follow this with a moisturiser to protect the barrier and SPF. I then make sure I have a big glass of water and smoothie for brekky to nourish from within & prepare me for the day!

What are the benefits of clean beauty? And why should we prioritise our skincare?

It’s just like choosing to nourish ourselves with healthy or organic foods. The less harmful toxins we subject our bodies to, the better we’re able to absorb nutrients, and the more positive an effect it will have on our skin health, after all, it’s our largest organ. With the right products, your skincare routine will keep your skin clean, aid exfoliation, and nourish it, which with the right ingredients will strengthen its barrier function, and improve pigmentation, breakouts, collagen & elastin production, dehydration, and prevent skin disorders & diseases. This all amounts to youthful skin!

If you could choose, what would be your favourite skincare product? And why?

Oh, it’s a few! A clean oil cleanser, like the Tata Harper Nourishing Oil Cleanser. A cosmeceutical Retinol with a vitamin C & E combination for effortless absorption and efficacy, and the Furtuna Replenishing Balm. I could live off these forever. Or to keep it simple, the correct cleanser, serum, moisturiser, and SPF for your skin type would be your essential basics.

As we are coming into winter, how can we reduce the likelihood of dryness, as well as maintaining good quality skin?

Drink plenty of water and make sure to moisturise every morning under your makeup. This protects your skin’s barrier and provides oil and hydration throughout the day. Check your moisturiser is suitable to your skin type during winter as it’s common for our skin to need more oil and hydration during the colder months.

What is the biggest misconception about skincare and beauty?

I think it’s really easy to get overwhelmed by different brands and their marketing vs understanding the ingredients contained in skincare. Unfortunately, it does take research to know how effective & clean a product is but it’s always worth educating yourself on. In other words, you could have the most popular products right now and they may not be right for your skin type.

To finish, what are your 3 top tips for taking care of your skin, maintaining overall good quality skin, and reducing signs of ageing.

They’d be:

  1. Find a salon and beauty therapist that uses products/ranges you feel are right for you to try, so you have someone to help educate you on your skin. For people with conditions such as hormonal acne, rosacea, dermatitis etc also please consider your inner health is all connected. This could mean you may need to test your hormones, see a naturopath or test your allergies and intolerances. So often I have seen someone’s skin transform when they cut something out like a whey protein or just dairy!
  2. An at-home skincare routine consisting of cosmeceutical grade products including cleanser, exfoliant ( enzymatic & physical combined ), a vitamin A, B, C & E, rich moisturiser, and clean SPF. You don’t need to use all of these serums at once but definitely try and alternate with these ingredients that build your skin’s strength.
  3. Have Facials and try Peels for their deep brightening effects, even if every once every 6 months. Drink lots of water, eat lots of fruit and veg, smile, and enjoy your skincare routine, it should be a fun and relaxing time in your day.
