In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), food is considered both medicine and the foundation of lifelong health. As the classic wisdom reminds us, “She who takes medicine but neglects food wastes the skills of the physician.” Nourishment is not only about sustenance – it’s about supporting the body’s core energies to prevent disease, promote vitality, and sustain longevity.

At the centre of this is the Kidney system, associated with the Water element and known as the root of life. The Kidneys govern reproduction, growth, development, and aging. They regulate fluid metabolism, open to the ears, and produce marrow to nourish the brain and spinal cord. Most importantly, they are the storehouse of Jing (Essence).

Jing is one of the Three Treasures of TCM, along with Qi (vital energy) and Shen (spirit). It is the foundation of our constitutional strength, fertility potential, and resilience through life’s transitions. We inherit our pre-natal Jing from our parents at conception – forming the blueprint of our health and vitality – while our post-natal Jing is shaped by the food we eat and the way we live day to day.

Jing plays a central role in every phase of a woman’s reproductive journey – from ovulation and menstruation to conception, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause. During pregnancy, a baby draws directly from the mother’s Kidney reserves – Qi, Blood, Yin, Yang, and Jing – making preconception nourishment essential.

To preserve and strengthen Jing, we look to the wisdom of food. The Kidneys are nourished by salty flavours and dark-coloured foods such as black sesame seeds, walnuts, seaweed, and black beans. These support Kidney essence, moisten dryness, soften hardness, and gently enhance elimination. In the colder, darker months – when the body craves warmth and rest – these foods become especially important for building reserves and protecting your life force.

This is where food becomes functional. When we prepare and eat with intention, we not only nourish the body – we support the deeper reservoirs of Jing, Yin, and Blood that sustain us through the seasons of life.

These Black Sesame Jing Balls are a traditional, food-as-medicine tonic designed to nourish the Kidneys, replenish Essence, and support women’s vitality – particularly during times of depletion, hormonal transition, or seasonal change.

Black Sesame ~ A Treasured Tonic in TCM

Hei Zhi Ma (黑芝麻, Black Sesame Seed) is deeply valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine for its sweet, neutral nature and its strong affinity with the Liver and Kidney meridians. Rich in oils, minerals, and vital essence, it offers a spectrum of therapeutic benefits, particularly for women across all life stages:

1. Nourishes Liver & Kidney Yin, and Blood

Supports healthy menstrual cycles, fertility, skin, and hair. Often used for signs of deficiency such as dizziness, fatigue, hair thinning, and dry eyes – common in those feeling depleted or overextended.

2. Tonifies Jing (Essence)

A powerful Jing tonic, Hei Zhi Ma helps preserve vitality, supports graceful aging, and strengthens hormonal and reproductive health.

3. Moistens and Aids Digestion

Its naturally oily quality gently lubricates the intestines – beneficial for those prone to dryness or constipation, particularly in the premenstrual or postpartum phase.

4. Supports Radiance from Within

Traditionally used to promote lustrous hair, glowing skin, and delay signs of aging, Hei Zhi Ma reminds us that outer beauty is rooted in inner nourishment.
